This one for you Mr. G.

Not his real name, but one of my students wanted some info on purchasing gear. Ok, I will take the opportunity to get a post out of this. Smart, heh?
Lets get some class news out of the way. We did have class January 4, and we of course did great (no target holders shot!!) I do have another class coming up for the first Sunday of Feb, let me know if you need to be there.
Ok, lets start with the basics of carrying a handgun and it’s associated gear. The foundation for proper carry revolves around a good belt. For everyday informal attire nothing seems to beat this:

The wilderness instructors belt.

The wilderness instructors belt.

You really have to try one to see just how good these belts are. Infinite adjustment within a large range, and really stiff construction enables carrying your weapon and other assorted gear with comfort.  Available from these folks.

You buy the belt based on your current size belt with one caveat. If planning on carrying inside waistband, get the next size up.

Got a belt, need a holster. Here it gets more personal. There are many ways to carry a handgun, I will assume for simplicity sake that belt carry of a medium size handgun is your choice. Here is one example.

CTAC by comptac

CTAC by comptac

Comp tac makes many different holsters, their version of the Infidel seems to work well too. You can buy them here.

Lets not forget a mag carrier and pepper spray carrier, which comp tac also sells. Good stuff folks, especially their mag and pepper carriers. Understand that there are two different diameter of pepper spray containers out there, with Fox Labs using one size and everybody else having another size. This is a direct link to comp tac’s page with light and pepper carriers.

I am now going to stick my neck out a bit. Actually a whole big bunch, but you want some advice and I have to speak in my semi-professional opinion of what will work better for you. The gun you took to class is a great weapon, with a long heritage from a Quality gun maker. It was not made in large numbers and as such finding good holsters and spare mags for it can be difficult. I would make an effort to obtain something more common and perhaps lighter and smaller. I thought about this long and hard and came up with one choice that might work really well for you. I came up with this:

Sig P239 with DAK

Sig P239 with DAK

Sig’s P239 tends to run towards the smaller and lighter end of their line. The capacity is more limited than some, but it really lends itself to everyday carry. Lots of holsters for it and Sig mags while not cheap are readily available. Stick to the 9mm version and maybe compare a DAK gun with a conventional DA/SA gun and see what you like. There are other choices out there, but for YOU I tend to believe this handgun will work best. Notice that I am actively encouraging you to carry a spare mag and pepper spray with you!!!

The above advice is for one specific individual, if you need specific advice for yourself let me know. I am always ready to shoot the breeze and talk guns and gear. See you in a bit.
